The Tocqueville Connection

Dear Reader:

U.S.-CREST began publication of The Tocqueville Connection in January 1996. As a non-profit organization dedicated to French-American relations, our goal was to give English-speaking readers easy access to news and analyses from France.

Publication was initially on a weekly basis; however, in 1999, we decided to switch to daily updates using novel software concepts we had developed for other applications. Circulation increased in consequence and we were able after a few months to begin continuously updating our publication.

At its inception, The Tocqueville Connection was a novel idea; Netscape Navigator (1994) and Microsoft Explorer (1995) were quite recent and there were not that many web sites to choose from, especially about France.

As we all know, the Web has developed explosively in the intervening fourteen years and we feel that The Tocqueville Connection would need an in-depth makeover to keep an acceptable look.

Furthermore, our readership has declined; from about 200,000 page views per month at its peak, in the early 2000s, we are now down to about 30,000. One reason is simple: news and analyses from and about France, in English, are now easily found on the Web.

We have thus decided to stop publication of The Tocqueville Connection as of today.

We thank you very much, Dear Reader, for your fidelity, and we hope that our very reluctant decision will not be too much of a disappointment.
